From Imported Gummies to Obesity Injections, Safety Warnings Over Natural Products and Health Supplements Spread to Consumers’ Bodies
As products targeting everyday health concerns such as better sleep and weight management spread rapidly, the risks of supplements and injections used outside medical supervision have also grown. In particular, products promoted through overseas direct purchases and social media advertising, such as gummies containing ashwagandha root extract, as well as obesity treatments used outside prescription controls, have shown that they can lead to serious adverse reactions such as acute pancreatitis. This trend can be seen as the result of a combination of the perception that natural substances or health functional foods are relatively mild and consumer demand for quick results. The key issue is that risk can vary greatly depending not just on whether a product is effective, but also on the duration of use, dosage, concomitant medications, and distribution channels; accordingly, prior verification and consultation have now become more important than freedom of choice alone.
