Between Clinical Document Leaks and Patient Concentration: Korea’s New Drug Development Enters a Phase of Reconnecting Data, Talent, and Rules
Domestic new drug development and global pharmaceutical investment in Korea continue to grow, with global drugmakers operating in Korea recording a total of KRW 1.0922 trillion in R&D investment related to local clinical research last year. However, on the ground where development speed is determined, 53% of Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials are being delayed, revealing a structure in which rising patient recruitment difficulties, institutional burden, and procedural complexity prevent greater investment from translating directly into stronger competitiveness. In this environment, even companies with promising candidates face heavier financial pressure. Cases such as Voronoi, which is conducting clinical trials across 29 sites in 10 countries, show that even with strong early results, prolonged in-house development increases both costs and operational burden, making more precise judgment on clinical design and the timing of technology transfer increasingly important.
